Acrylonitrile is an organic liquid with the chemical formula CH2CHCN. This chemical is also known by other names such as vinyl cyanide and Cyanoethylene.
This chemical substance is colorless, while in some samples it is yellow due to the presence of impurities. Acrylonitrile has a pungent smell similar to the taste of garlic or onion. The molecular structure of this material includes vinyl group linked with nitrile.
Acrylonitrile was first synthesized by French chemist Charles Moreau in 1893. Acrylonitrile is obtained from the catalytic process of ammoxidation of propylene (SOHIO process). Acetonitrile and hydrogen cyanide are the main side products of this process.
