Sodium bicarbonate is usually in the form of white crystalline powder. This substance is prepared from the reaction between sodium chloride, ammonia, carbon dioxide and water, which is also known as the Solvay process. In this reaction, sodium bicarbonate is obtained as a precipitate and sodium carbonate is formed after drying and heating.
It is also possible to obtain sodium bicarbonate in the form of a precipitate by passing the gas through a boiling solution of pure sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide solution.
This substance is naturally present in most mineral water springs. Aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate is slightly alkaline due to the formation of hydroxide ions.
